Castile soap is a vegetable-based soap that originated in the Castile region of Spain. Originally, it was made using olive oil, but in modern times, it may be made with other plant-based oils such as coconut, hemp, almond, and avocado, to name a few. It is a non-toxic, biodegradable, natural soap that is gentle and environmentally friendly. WHAT CAN YOU USE IT FOR?
This soap has so many uses and is wonderfully versatile. It can be used to wash your pets, your kids, yourself, your floors, dishes, clothes, toilets, countertops, etc., etc. Today I am covering a few household cleaning items you can ditch, with a bottle of castile soap, to be more green about your cleaning and more conscious about you and your family’s health. I will also include 5 Castile soap recipes for you to make yourself!
MOLD AND MILDEW CLEANER
You will need
- Baking Soda ½ cup
- 2 tbsps of Castile soap
- 20 drops of tea tree essential oil
Mix the baking soda and soap together, forming a paste. Mix in the essential oils. Use with sponge or brush on mold-affected tile or surface. Let sit for up to an hour for more extensive cases. Store in a covered container. If the mixture hardens over time, add castile soap to soften at next use.
TILE CLEANING SPRAY
You will need
- Small bowl or measuring cup. (measuring cup is best for the spout to pour into your bottle, otherwise, funnel may be used)
- Reusable spray bottle, at least 8 oz (preferably amber or tinted glass)
- 1/2 cup of filtered water
- 1/2 cup of Castile soap
- 1 tbsn of baking soda
- 25 drops lemon, 15 drops sweet orange, 15 drops tea tree essential oils
In a small measuring cup or small bowl, mix baking soda and castile soap together with a whisk. Pour into a spray bottle. Add water and your essential oils. Gently shake before each use to properly disperse oils. Spray on tile surfaces, then wipe clean with a sponge or brush.
DITCH YOUR SOS PAD
This recipe was one provided by the Aromahead Institute. It’s fantastic at fighting greasy pots and pans.
- You will need
- Pink Himalayan Sea Salt 2 tbsps.
- Castile soap 4 tbsp.
Combine the salt and soap, mixing with your hands until all the soap is absorbed into the salt. The soap will get hard over time. This is what you want so that you can break a piece off when you want to use it. Use a chunk and an abrasive sponge to lessen the amount of “elbow grease” you need to get those pots and pans clean. Use caution with pots that have a protective coating.
ALL-PURPOSE SURFACE CLEANER
You will need:
- Refillable Spray bottle (at least 8 oz)
- Distilled water (or you can use regular water if you are planning on using the mixture within a few days)
- Castile soap 1.5 tbsps.
Combine water and soap in a spray bottle.
Add 20-25 drops total of preferred essential oils listed at the end of this article. You can choose only one or blend up to 3.
